Its current name is Berat, Albania depends on the dialect Tosk.The name comes actually from the old name of Bel (i) degree. White City in South Slav languages that neighboring Albanians have since the early Middle Ages. In fact, throughout the medieval period, the city was mentioned by the name of the annals of Greek, Latin, and Slavic.
Berat is still one of the oldest Albanian cities, people started living there since year 600-1800 BC. The first inhabitants of Berat were originally called Illyrians, then finally Arbëresh and Albanians. In ancient Thracians, Macedonian erected Antipatreia city, a heavily fortified city which subsequently withstood many years of reigns by the Romans. During the Byzantine period, Berat was called Pulcheriopolis like the Byzantine Empress Pulcheria.
At that time, both the hilltop castle and defensive walls were rebuilt and strengthened. This fortress mentioned in the writings of ancient historians Polybius and Livy. Later it was included in the list of cities fortified by Emperor Justinian.
In the early medieval period, Berat was conquered by invaders of Bulgaria, being under their occupation between 860-1018. Yet the city has not fallen but grown in importance. The year 1018 being the date on which the application was first mentioned in documents under his name Albanian Berat.
Since the 13th century, marked by crusades, the city is ruled by one of the Angevin of Serbian and Albanian princes of Muzakaj clan. Its fortification system was rebuilt then, much of the actual fortifications dating from that period. In 13-14 centuries, St. Mary Vlaherna, Trinity Church and St. Michael’s Church was built. Then Berat had a sewage system remarkable for its time.
